Breastfeeding in Public: Taking Your Show on the Road

Breastfeeding in public can be quite a challenge, but if you ever plan on leaving your house, it’s going to happen sometime. So, you might as well know what will help make it easier for you and your baby – and to rejoin the rest of the world!

Set the Tone for Breastfeeding in Public

Probably the most important part of nursing your child in a public place is just getting your mind in the right place. It’s easy to feel like the moment you position your baby to nurse – no matter how covered up you might be – that everyone around you is watching you, surprised and/or horrified that you are simply feeding your child her meal. breastfeeding in public, public breastfeeding

Although you may encounter the occasional prude, most people are perfectly fine with discreet public nursing sessions. So many moms have found that if they’re at ease, others will be too; it kind of helps set the tone for everyone.

That being said, making sure you and your baby are adequately covered can also go a long way toward making you feel more comfortable. I suggest getting an actual breastfeeding cover, with an adjustable strap to place around your neck and keep the nursing cover in place; this will be especially handy as your baby grows and becomes more wiggly, because you’ll have both hands free to keep him in place while the cover stays secure.

The best nursing covers have a rigid, flexible neckline, which help hold the cover away from your chest so that you can keep an eye on your baby but still keep you both covered up. However, I’ve found this isn’t completely necessary; I have one of these as well as a great one that doesn’t have this type of neckline, and I can still prop it up and peek in just fine – it’s just kind of a nice extra to have.

There are also nursing covers on the market that work as a sort of large blanket with a weight in one corner, which works well if you’d rather have one that’s a bit less restrictive or less fancy – or, if you want to keep it really simple (or if you’ve forgotten your regular nursing cover and you’re in a pinch), a regular old blanket will also work just fine. Just throw it over your shoulder and the baby, and you’re good to go!

One last note: If possible, it helps to find a place that’s comfortable and a bit out of the way. If you can find a place with an armrest, that usually helps keep your arm from getting too tired – and the fewer people you have to worry about interrupting you and your baby, the better!
